Netherlands: Pepper prices on decent levels due to production delays

Prices on the pepper market are decent. The enduring cold has stalled production, which in turn ensured a tight market. "We have a shortage in all colours,” says Peter Fes of Best of Four. "But the volumes are now starting to come in."

Quality is good, in spite of the weather. “We can only hope that people’s desire to catch up doesn’t lead to overproduction.”

Best of Four cultivates a total of 130 hectares. Most of the peppers go to Germany and England and to a lesser extent Scandinavia. To stand out, the growers' cooperative focuses on shortening the chain: "We want to limit transport movements as much as possible," explains Fes. "The market is the market, and you’re stuck with it. But we do look at the costs."
