US(MI): Boehler's Greenhouses unfazed by recent flooding

Scott Boehler isn’t a fan of all the recent rain, but it isn’t anything he hasn’t seen before. “We’ve been doing this long enough,” Boehler said. “We just have to put in some extra work and have at it.” Scott owns the Saginaw greenhouse with his brother Steve. The family business has been around since the 1930s, and even survived the memorable flood of 1986. So there’s a reason why Boehler isn’t panicking over the rain.

“That’s Mother Nature and an act of God, there isn’t much you can do,” Boehler said.

“We still have water down by the road section by the curb, and three of the (greenhouses) still have water in them. It’s only an inch deep, but you can’t go in there or you’ll kick dirt over all the plants.”

Boehler says the water was 8 inches deep in 1986.

The staff has been putting in extra hours cleaning and trying to get things back to normal.

“We worked Saturday until dark, and Sunday we did even more. Today we started putting things back in place.” Boehler said.

With more possible rain in the forecast, Boehler is hoping it will come to an end soon. He says he hopes Mother Nature cooperates on Mother’s Day, traditionally a big day for nurseries.

“We don’t need any more rain, we need more weather like we had on Monday.”
