Spain: Tomato acreage increases by 4.5% to 10,900 hectare

According to data by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, the acreage dedicated to the growing of tomatoes has increased this year to a total of 10,900 hectares, or 4.5%. Likely as a result, production also increased: with 19.7%.

Other crops were also given more room for cultivation. Lettuce increased with 1.8% to 33,100 ha. Potato acreage has gone up with 7.4% to 3,300 ha, leading to a 9% increase of production (or 78,300 tons).

Zucchini plants were allowed an increase of 3.2% to 8,600 ha., although production is estimated to remain the same with 459,000 tons.
