"Belgium: "Strawberry prices acceptable to all parties at the moment"
The volumes of strawberries start to increase from week to week now. The production of Sonata is at the top and Clery is decreasing somewhat. The Elsanta's are a little later this year because of the colder weather. According to Ralph Bogers of CLTV Zundert prices fluctuate a little. "It is always a bit of searching at the start of the season. We had low prices, but also moments with peaks. Just before Easter prices were good and also at the end of last week there was a top again. From Monday prices decreased again and today the price is acceptable for everybody. Both for the trade attractive to buy and also reasonable for the grower. Last week the best price was 3.80/pound and now the price varies between Euro 2.00 and 2.50."
Difficult to plan
"The Elsanta are a few weeks later than normal. This is partly caused by the cultivation system. If the grower has a heated glasshouse it may, depending on the heating regime, make a difference of a few weeks. With a cold glasshouse, where there are no heating possibilities, the production can very well be delayed by a few weeks. However, this may well be made up for if the weather is warm for a few days. It is always difficult to plan with strawberries."
Increase in volume
"We see the volume increasing. In our opinion we have a reasonable volume. We are now busy with six growers. Not last week, but the week before that, 175 tons came before the clock and last week that was already about 220 tons. Within a few weeks, starting in the middle of May, supply will really be at the top. It is difficult to estimate how the market will go then, that is dependent on a lot of circumstances. In spring the local trade is very important, when people feel the spring they rather eat strawberries then when the weather is cold. Now one notices from everything and everybody that consumers change form winter to spring food."
