Mori Star Perennials:

Canada: Niagara-on-the-Lake greenhouse catches fire

Firefighters in Niagara-on-the-Lake are investigating the cause of a blaze they fought in blustery conditions outside a greenhouse Saturday afternoon. "Winds at this level can move the fire," Niagara-on-the-Lake Chief Alex Burbidge said, as crews were packing up the hoses at Mori Star Perennials on Line 6. "It acts like a blow torch."

Smoke was reported billowing on the property between Four Mile Creek Rd. and Concession 3 just before 3 pm Saturday. Burbidge said when crews arrived, flames were visible at the back of the property. Fire was located outside the greenhouse in some pots and skids of cardboard and paper.

A hydrant was conveniently located across the street from the greenhouse, but 800 feet of hose was required to reach to the back of the property where the fire was located. Burbidge said firefighters managed to confine the blaze to a 12 metre by 15 metre area by using a good attack strategy. Damage is estimated at about $20,000.
