Italy wins back market shares with lettuce

Italian lettuce production is once again on the increase after a boost in sales. The upsurge is likely due to lower pricing on German markets. Central and Western European greenhouse production on the whole has seen a stronger representation in EU markets, though quantities are still limited. German production in particular is restricted to a small number of companies, mainly in the south of Germany.

Producers in the south of France experienced increased competition in traditional export markets. Winter production is grinding to a halt and available quantities are decreasing rapidly. Green varieties have had to lower their prices, while the red varieties continue to be stable.
