Italy: New investments for babyleaf grower Euro.Com

Located in the fertile Piana del Sele (Campania), an area with good soil, climate and orographic conditions, EuroCom, a company founded in 1997, has always specialised in baby leaves. In 2011, it has been recognized as a PO (Producer Organisation) and has since made a series of new investments to complete its extension plan. In 2012, it started building a new commercial farm with 50 hectares of tunnels.

Today, the company has 160 hectares in a number of production sites that produce a volume of 35-45,000 kg per day. In addition, it has completely renovated the processing and packing plant, which occupies 3,000 sq m, and built an area dedicated to storage and raw material control as well as one to pack unwashed produce (I range).

Two new 400 sq m storage units were built with a forced cold air tunnel system to blast-chill incoming produce that can hold up to 200 pallets. The whole warehouse is cooled not to interrupt the cold chain.

A de-watering machine was also installed to eliminate excess water without stressing the cut produce, as well as a vacuum cooler with a 10 industrial pallet capacity.

In addition to this, there are also new multi-head scales, flow packing machines and vertical bag machines, as well as four processing and packing lines, one of which is dedicated to organic produce. There's also new machine for shrink-wrapping to help the existing one, which is two years old.

As Enrico Rossi, sales manager of Euro.Com, says, "our attention for innovation derives from the young and dynamic nature of our company, where new generations occupy important positions while the old traditions are maintained."

The top management is made up of owner brothers Fabio (managing director) and Icilio Pierri (control manager), sided by nephews Enrico (sales manager) and Mirko Rossi (logistics and warehouse manager) and by Marika, daughter of Fabio, who manages human resources and the administration.

Many other employees are young and enthusiastic. At peak moments, Euro.Com employs up to 120 workers, 80 in the field and 40 in the warehouse.

Because of their enterprising spirit, Euro.Com is among the leaders supplying baby leaves to foreign markets and represents a raw material reservoir for big foreign packers, with direct supplies to retailers abroad.

"Our main unwashed I range products such as rocket, corn salad, spinach, green and red lettuce, red and oriental chard are destined to the main IV range packers and to a number of European supermarket chains. 95% of the production is shipped abroad. We have clients in Great Britain, Netherlands, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Portugal and Russia."

In addition to our main traditional product, wild rocket, there are now other products. "The smooth leaf teen spinach, which was introduced a couple of years ago, was welcomed with a lively demand which sometimes was even higher than the supply. Response was good also for green and red salad mixes, for Green and Dark Kale and for other products such as curly and smooth parsley, coriander and dill."

Our latest product are fresh aromatic herbs such as thyme, mint, sage, oregano and rosemary. We produce a lot of them and they are destined to retail.

We also have a 25 hectare totally organic productive site for the production of rocket, baby spinach, baby leaves, red chard, bull's blood and tatsoi.
