Acreage of German vegetable cultivation remains the same size

The vegetable cultivation in Germany remains the same size and has developed stably in 2012, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de. This was shown in the current figures from the German Bureau for Statistics. In 2012, vegetables were grown on 114,631 hectares of open ground in Germany. It was done by 6,969 companies in total.

With 19,329 hectares, asparagus were the most important vegetable in Germany once again in 2012, followed by carrots at 10,150 hectares and consumption onions at 9,512 hectares. After that comes cabbage with 6,212 hectares, cauliflower with 4,369 hectares, peas with 4,174 hectares and iceberg lettuce with 4,169 hectares.
 
In total 2,033 companies grew vegetables in greenhouses in 2012, on 1,305 hectares. The most important greenhouse vegetables last year were tomatoes with 315 hectares, cucumbers with 219 hectares and field lettuce with 284 hectares.
