Dutch horticultural suppliers turnover 2.6 billion euro
Economic indicators
The gross added value of all suppliers in the greenhouse sector increased from 2 billion (in 1995) to over 3 billion (in 2009). The share in the added value of the horticultural sector (7.2 billion euros in 2009) has risen from 36% to 45%. Research also points out that after 2020, industry suppliers (including energy, raw material and services in the Netherlands) will represent an even greater share than the primary horticulture. Employment in these branches covers approximately 6,500 jobs.
International growth
Anno 2013, most companies in the horticultural supply are also active abroad. The percentage of turnover achieved abroad varies from 11% to 57%. 50% of this turnover is attained in Western Europe.
Outside Europe, major markets such as Russia, Turkey, Mexico, East Africa and the Far East are the most important. Without exception these SMBs expect a further increase of sales abroad. The surveyed companies think extensive collaboration and lasting relationships are a must for future success.
Realizing sustainability
Dutch horticulture cultivates a small surface, with minimal strain on the environment, producing healthy food, flowers and plants. The growth of the world population, migration to the cities and rising incomes in emerging markets, all increase demand for high-quality fresh produce. The emerging retail in these countries imposes requirements on a more sustainable production in which covered or roofed horticulture plays an important role.
