Netherlands: New rootstocks to revolutionize cut rose breeding?

Moerheim and Van de Pol have introduced innovative, more profitable rootstocks for cut roses, which the two breeders suggest may well transform the way the rose market operates. The three new rootstock types, for which patents are currently pending, are called ‘Pro 3’, ‘Pro 4’ and ‘Pro 5’. According to the breeders number 3 results in a production increase of 10 to 20% when compared to cuttings or ‘Natal Briar’, while 4 and 5 provide an additional increase in stem weight and quality as well. The exact increase depends on the variety as well as growth conditions, they add.

“This is exciting news for breeders anywhere in the world”, Ton Witmer, rose product specialist at Dutch Moerheim, comments. “For those in The Netherlands, it means rose breeding may become economically interesting again”, he adds.
