US: Nogales port officers find $1M worth of pot in bell peppers

A Mexican man was arrested Tuesday at a Nogales port of entry for attempting to smuggle more than a ton of marijuana into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Mariposa Port of Entry referred the 35-year-old driver of a tractor-trailer rig for an additional inspection. The rig was X-rayed and a CBP dog detected drugs in a shipment of bell peppers. A further search led to the discovery of 280 packages of marijuana worth slightly more than $1 million.

The drugs and rig were seized. The driver was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
