The Netherlands are the second biggest exporter of fresh fruit and vegetables after Spain. In 2011 the Netherlands exported an amount worth more than 9.5 billion dollars. Spain was number one with a value of 11.8 billion dollars. The Netherlands, however, were number one on the list of vegetable exporters with a value of 5.8 billion dollars in 2011. On the fresh fruit list the Netherlands are in third place with an export value of 3.8 billion dollars.
As an importer of fresh vegetables and fresh fruit, the Netherlands are fifth in size with an import value of more than 6 billion dollar in 2011. The USA are by far the biggest importer with a value of 14.5 billion dollar. As a producer of fresh fruit and vegetables the Netherlands are small and are in 21st place and on the list of fresh fruit the role of the Netherlands is insignificant.

Both the production and the international trade in fresh fruit and vegetables keep on growing, both at about the same tempo. Worldwide the production of fruit is
730 million tons, in 2000 this was still 580 million tons. The international trade in fresh fruit grew from 43 million tons in 2000 to 70 million tons now.
Worldwide production of fresh vegetables is now 900 million tons against 680 million tons in 2000. The international trade in fresh vegetables increased from 19 million in 2000 to 36 million tons now. China is by far the largest producer of fruit followed at a distance by India and far behind that Brazil follows and the USA, Turkey, Italy and Iran, Spain, Mexico, the Philippines, Indonesia and Egypt.
Bananas and watermelons are as far as production is concerned the most important products, followed by apples, oranges and grapes. Bananas are also the product most traded internationally, followed at a distance by apples, oranges and mandarins. China and India are also in the top two positions as producers of vegetables. Worldwide tomatoes are the most grown product followed by onions and cucumbers. Onions and tomatoes fight for top position of the product most traded internationally.
