Wikiplant database lists every plant traded in Holland

A new internet database listing every single house and garden plant that can be bought in The Netherlands has just been launched. The project is called Wikiplant, after the well-known online encyclopedia.

Wikiplant claims to be exhaustive as well as objective, providing information on all the plants that are traded in The Netherlands. The database system caters to plant breeders and wholesalers in particular, but can be used by other professionals who work with plants just as easily. The entire structure can even be permanently integrated into your own information systems.

Every plant is described through three different pictures; one overview, one detailed and one ‘mood image’. Searching can be done based on criteria such as outward appearance, application as well as any special, unique characteristics the plants possess. Pricing information, current availability and care tips are provided alongside the results.

Contrary to the Wikipedia online encyclopedia, access is not completely unrestricted however. Users have to apply for a login code through Wikiplant.nl first.

As it stands Wikiplant appears to only be available in the Dutch language. French, German, English and Italian versions should soon be accessible as well however, according to FloraHolland.

The plant database was developed by Ki Plant Concept BV, with a one-time contribution from the Dutch Product Board for Horticulture.
