Germany: Substantial fire damage by flammable shading screen

On Sunday February 17, in a garden in the German town of Coesfeld (Nordrhein-Westfalen) an assimilation lamp caught fire. The cause was a technical defect. It involved an older lamp with a plastic casing which, unlike the newer types, can sometimes be a fire hazard. For this reason German authorities have habitually recommended that no assimilation lamps with plastic exterior be used. In combination with flammable shading screens they can be very dangerous. If such a lamp, for whatever reason, catches fire, the nearby screens go up in flames, making the outbreak of a violent, raging fire almost unavoidable.

Exactly this happened in Coesfeld. An assimilation lamp ignited and the fire quickly spread out to surrounding screens. The fire subsequently spread to three greenhouses with a total range of 3,500 m². The fire caused much damage. The total destruction is estimated at 500,000 Euro.
