Switzerland: Nine new tomato varieties for backyard cultivation
"Cultivating your own garden has many advantages," says Beat Ryffel of Ryffel Nursery, the company supplying the new tomato plants. "Obviously you know exactly where your vegetables come from, and propagation can be as sustainable as you want it to be. The produce is likely to be more nutritious and can be eaten straight from the garden." To help out pastime growers Ryffel has selected some very special tomato varieties of "La selection du Chef", which of course are GMO free and very robust, but also yield a rich harvest.
Ryffel, in his selection process, opted for existing varieties that have already proven their merit in the past: they are relatively low-maintenance, contain important vitamins and have a lot of flavours and healthy ingredients. Nine different varieties will be made available: from the 'Fleurette' and the nutritious 'Garance', to the small sweet cherry tomato 'Pepe'.
