Spain: Holandahortitec supplies horticultural equipment at La Palma

In 2012 Carolijn de Beij started company Holandahortitec on the island of La Palma. "In 2009 we secured an office building. Later we started exploring the local market, mapping potential ventures. Last year our company was officially established," says Carolyn. "Holandahortitec specializes in supplying equipment to growers, horticultural companies and farmers. Basically, we supply Dutch horticultural technology.”

Switch banana growers

"We noticed that the horticultural community over there was facing some tremendous developments, and this is still the case," she continues. "After the banana war many banana growers made a switch to other products, mainly avocados and greenhouse vegetables. Also, there is a language problem: producers in the Canary Islands speak only Spanish, and Dutch companies rarely do. We are the connecting link because we speak Spanish, have the technical expertise and are based locally."

Ideal growing conditions

Carolijn indicates that Holandahortitec focuses mainly on fruit and horticulture. “These are growers of tomatoes, citrus, avocados, cucumbers, lettuce, bananas and other fruits. General know-how of growers in the Canary Islands is lower than in the Netherlands, but the growing conditions are ideal. The climate, thanks to its location in the Atlantic, is very stable; temperatures typically hovering between 17 and 28 degrees. There is also lots of sun. The demand of these customers primarily focuses on refrigerators and machines for sorting, washing and packing. We are an independent company and currently we represent Geerlofs Cooling Techniques. In the future, we expect to represent other companies as well."
