Germany: Nursery heated with compost

Moritz Isensee is an organic farmer at heart. To reduce the use of gas and oil for heating his greenhouse, he uses huge compost heaps instead. The heat generated by the decaying process provides ample fuel to keep the nursery warm and cosy.

To teach other interested farmers and nature lovers the ropes, Isensee offers a two-day seminar on alternative uses of compost. "Yesterday we got together with expert Heiner Cuhls who showed us the basic principles, today we built a compost heap on my lot," said Isensee. The grower plans to grow radishes, lettuce and kohlrabi in his three large nurseries, utilizing the heat from his compost heaps. Currently, there are still some 18 seminar participants engaged in the construction of a heap large enough to accommodate proper cultivation.
