Spain: Cucumber prices rise again
Throughout January’s last week, many changes in Almeria horticultural products took place. A fall in temperature along with the end of the production cycle of some crops has given way to a decrease in production and hence, a rise in prices. Such is the case for all the varieties of cucumbers. The long cucumber is being traded between seventy-five and ninety-eight cents, the French variety is at between ninety and seventy cents a kilo, and the short black cucumbers range from a euro and sixty cents per kilo. For its part, striped eggplant prices vary within a Euro sixty cents and a Euro twenty cents, while the long eggplant is being traded between a euro four cents and a euro thirty-five cents per kilo.
In turn, zucchini production has increased due to the beginning of the new transplants harvest. Fat zucchini is sold at prices between fifty and seventy-five cents while the light type is being traded between sixty-three and eighty cents a kilo. Green beans are still at a high. The strike variety is being traded between three Euros eighty cents and four Euros ninety cents a kilo. The émérite green beans are at an average of two Euros and ten cents, while perona semi green beans are being traded at an average of two Euros and forty cents and the long perona varies within two Euros ten cents and two Euros sixty cents per kilo.
As for the peppers, the Italian green variety is at prices ranging from seventy-five cents to a Euro per kilo. The green Lamuyo pepper's price spiked this week with variations within ninety cents and a Euro ten cents. Red Lamuyos are being traded between seventy and ninety-five cents a kilo. The green Californian pepper ranges from ninety cents to a euro and three cents, the red Californian peppers trades between sixty-eight and seventy-six cents while the yellow California is at an average of seventy-five cents a kilo. For its part, tomato prices aren't very profitable this year mainly due to Moroccan competition in the European market. Green tomatoes are at an average of forty-eight cents and red ones are listed at thirty-six cents per kilo. Vine tomatoes are at fifty-nine cents and pear tomatoes cost and average of forty-five cents a kilo.
It's worth noting that, at present, some crops are being already being uprooted in preparation for the spring plantings transplants, mainly melon and watermelon. There are even some areas where the earliest Galia melon crops have already been transplanted.
