US (OH): OSU horticulture internships offer real-world experience

For young people interested in a career in the horticultural industry, there is no better place to gain experience in the United States than with The Ohio State University. The institution, year after year, connects college students with U.S. companies to offer them valuable experience in the horticulture, agriculture and turf grass industries.

Every year, applicants from across the globe apply to The Ohio Program for a chance at an internship with an American company. Recruiters from Ohio State make visits to several colleges around the world to find 450 worthy candidates to place them with companies for internship positions throughout the year.

“We look for people who want to have a career in horticulture,” said Greg Lecki. “We want people who have an interest and some experience in green industries.” The Ohio Program takes these individuals, gives them an orientation at Ohio State, and then sends them to companies training in their area of interest where they can gain experience. The internships are paid, and the companies in which students are placed offer hand -on training on how to manage a functioning business.

“We work with industry leaders, with the leading horticultural and agricultural companies, but we also work with many family farms,” said Lecki. “Some applicants prefer large operations and some prefer small ones, so we offer different types of internships.”

With over 30 years of existence, The Ohio Program is one of the largest programs of its kind, and it's placed over 9,000 students from around the world in internships which prepare them for careers in horticulture.

“We want students to learn professional skills,” said Lecki. “So they can stay in the business for many years to come.”

Applications for the program are accepted throughout the year, though Lecki noted that the best time to apply would be between September and February. More information, and an application, can be found here.
