Like many growers in Denmark in the late 1990's, Lars Kolling had heard about the Aqua Hort system of treating greenhouse water with electrolysis, and some of what he heard wasn't positive. But after growing cucumbers only using UV and osmosis disinfection to treat water, he decided to give Aqua Hort a try, and he was pleased with the results.Kolling committed to no using chemicals in his greenhouse, so when he was looking for something that went beyond what his current water-treatment options could offer, he was somewhat limited. When he heard about Aqua Hort, which uses nothing but electrolysis, he saw it as something he'd be willing to try.
“I never had a problem with UV or osmosis disinfection, but they weren't doing anything special,” said Kolling. “So I thought I would give Aqua Hort a try, and after I started, I never used anything else again.” He noticed better plant development, and when he got his water tested, he notice a positive change in the amounts of copper and calcium in his water. But one of the biggest differences he noted was apparent when he compared his cucumbers to those from neighboring growers.
“A group of us growers used the same packing house, and my cucumbers were always preferred,” said Kolling. “Of course, cucumbers are mostly water, so the lack of chemicals in the water is what helped with the taste.” Kolling sold his greenhouse last year, but when asked about Aqua Hort, he still holds the system in high regard.
“We did an experiment one time,” he recalled. “We stopped using the machine for a month, and after that, I decided we'd never do that again.”
