"Five years ago 5000 pallets arrived, now there are only 1700"
Canary Island tomato acreage shrunk
"Five years ago," says Paul Zuiderdijk, "5000 pallets arrived weekly. Now it's 1600, 1700." He is talking about Canary tomatoes, which he has been importing for a long, long time.
"It's a small area and in the last few years it has shrunk. People quit, or plant less," according to Paul Zuiderwijk of the import company of the same name from Maasdijk. He sees a lot of switches to banana growing, mangos and avocados. "There are a lot of transport costs and a lot of subsidies have disappeared in the past few years," he explains. The cultivation is close to the Spanish product and in the Moroccan market.
Zuiderwijk imports the Intense tomato from Spain. The Canary season will last until the end of May. Then Zuiderwijk will switch to Dutch tomatoes. At the moment the prices are between 5.5 and 6 Euro. "That's reasonable for this time of year. The quality in general has improved over the last few years and is good at the moment," concludes Zuiderwijk.
