Spain: Praise for Almeria's international focus and innovation in agriculture
The General Secretary of Agriculture and Food, Judit Anda, was yesterday in Almeria, where she praised the international focus of the region's fruit and vegetable sector, as well as its strong commitment to innovation in its search for new products adapted to consumer demands. Judit Anda held meetings with the managers of Primaflor and Murgiverde, with whom she analysed the current situation of the campaign, the firms' business projects and the Government's initiatives to facilitate innovation, product promotion and concentration of supply.
Anda also assessed some of the amendments approved by the European Parliament's Commission of Agriculture regarding the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), as well as the commitment to instruments that promote concentration of supply and the improvement in management mechanisms. She highlighted the opportunity that the new CAP offers to the sector to boost research and technological transfer through the support to operational groups.
In her meeting with the President and the General Director of Grupo Primaflor, Lorenzo Belmonte and Emilio Mur, Anda referred to this group as a leader in the sector in terms of technological innovation. She assessed the firm's commitment to processed products, such as packed, ready to microwave vegetables; a strategy which, in addition to meeting consumer demands, also provides added value to the products grown in the area.
Primaflor is also an example of public-private collaboration, as along with Andalusia's Agrarian and Fishing Technologies Research and Education Institute (Ifapa) has worked in the development of strawberry plantations in greenhouses using the New Growing System (NGS) technology, which allows for maximum quality and production before the start of the traditional season.
