The tomato campaign started with some quality problems in a few Spanish regions caused by heavy rains, although everything is now back to normal, according to David Murcia, of Unica Group.
"At the moment, the campaign is developing normally, in spite of the weather. Although the winter has not been particularly cold, there is a considerable variation between day and night, and this has an impact on crop development and production."
In the Netherlands and other Central and Northern European countries temperatures have been really cold, so prices have been affected in a way by a lack in supply.
"Our business, just like any other, is ruled by the law of supply and demand, so variations in product availability have an evident impact on prices. This is particularly noticeable whenever the weather takes its toll," he explains.
Unica Group unites 6 cooperatives: Ferva, El Grupo, Casur, Cohorsan, Cabasc and Agrieco. "Unica Group is the result of an initiative focusing on the consolidation of local producers to help them obtain a better profitability and on providing our clients with a better service," affirms David Murcia. "We are an example of successful consolidation in our sector."
Unica Group has a very wide range of tomatoes of many types, from vine tomatoes and other standard types to specialties including types like cherry, cocktail, etc.
"Exports are the base of our business, with the German, Scandinavian, British and Austrian markets being relevant for us," he states.
"Regardless of the crop, Germany is extremely important for us, as it is, by far, the largest market for our products."
Unica Group offers a wide range of packaging formats, some of which will be promoted, along with its brands Unica Group, SoolPassion and Gigante Verde Fresh, at the upcoming Fruit Logistica 2013, to take place in Berlin between 6 and 8 February.
"Being able to offer multiple specialties gives us a competitive advantage. At Fruit Logistica 2013, we will present several new products and formats. For example, we would like to highlight the tomato mixes with different specialties: 'everyday mix', 'organic pack' and 'salad experience', which cover consumer needs and adjust to our daily routines," explains David Murcia.
"Our goal at Fruit Logistica is to strengthen the relationship with our international clients. We also plan on establishing new commercial relationships with the new products and formats we will present in Berlin," he concludes.
