US (FL): One of the largest flower growers in foreclosure over 128 acres

Kerry’s Nursery, one of the largest flower growers in Florida, has been hit with a foreclosure lawsuit over nearly 128 acres in Homestead and Apopka. Florida Federal Land Bank Association, an affiliate of West Palm Beach-based Farm Credit of Florida, filed a lawsuit on Dec. 18 against Kerry’s Nursery, formerly known as Kerry’s Bromelaid Nursery, and managing member Kerry Herndon. He founded the company in 1970, according to its website.

Kerry’s Nursery has more than 2.8 million square feet of greenhouses for its inventory of 5 million orchids and 2 million bromeliads. Its flowers are sold throughout the country at retailers such as Publix, Home Depot (NYSE: HD), Costco (NASDAQ: COST), Kroger (NYSE: KR), Safeway (NYSE: SWY) and Trader Joe’s.

In general, flowers from overseas have proven to be tough competition for domestic growers.
