Mexico: Over 4,000 hectares of damaged vegetables are detected

To date, just over 4,200 hectares of vegetables were detected with damages within the District of Rural Development Cajeme 148 (Mexico) because of the frost in recent days in the region. In this region a total of 340 hectares of peas, squash, among others were lost.

The head of the DDR 148 Cajeme of the SAGARPA, Elvia Garcia Ruiz, said that progress has been slow, but according to the preliminary report 3,780 hectares have been detected with moderate to partial damages, so the next few days will be crucial to determine the damages in the crops. On Tuesday values below 0 degrees Celsius have been registered.

He said that now damages will be more evident, most notably on corn were partial damages were observed, although the area is still being examined.

He reported that damages have been detected in pumpkin crops, which have already been listed as total losses.

He said that of the 11,000 hectares of vegetables established in the Valley, only 10% have been examined for damages which may be severe to strong.

"We are transferring all information to the Delegation, thus it will depend that each of the zones are identified and verify if some support is channeled," said Garcia Ruiz.
