Harthoorn offers salty samphire from Portuguese greenhouses

After a long time experimenting with growing samphire in greenhouses in the Portuguese Alcochete, Dutch company Harthoorn has finally reached the right soil composition. "The right soil gives the samphire a distinctive, salty taste. It’s tender, really green and sustainable. Everything that fresh samphire needs to be, really," says Sjaak Harthoorn.

"We’ve been harvesting samphire since the first week of 2013, in the coldest month of the year. We planted it in the first week of November and now we have our first salty samphire.” Sjaak adds, laughingly: “Thanks to the endurance of my wife and myself by the way, because samphire growing is not for everyone. Anyway, at the moment we have a greenhouse in production and are about to issue a second.”

"Fortunately there are enough funds to expand in the future, so we can guarantee supply. BioVision in Hansweert happened upon our samphire last summer, and they saw great opportunities in potential distribution. To provide all the customers in the Netherlands and Belgium, Frits Steijlen of BioVision does the sales in the Netherlands, and Hans Steijn of Tuca focuses on sales in Belgium."
