Spain: Sharp increase in aubergine prices

The second week of the year has been characterised by a sharp increase in aubergine, cucumber, courgette and tomato prices. In the case of aubergines, both the striped and the long varieties are reaching the highest levels of the entire campaign. Striped aubergine prices stand at 1.50 to 1.90 Euro, while the long variety has reached 1.70 to 1.80 Euro per kilo.

Thick courgettes have an opening price of 1.60 Euro and are sold at auction for 1.40 Euro per kilo. Thin courgette prices range from 1.50 to 1.70 Euro per kilo. All cucumber varieties have also increased in price. Long cucumbers have an average price of 85 cents, short black cucumbers stand at 1 to 1.20 Euro per kilo, and French cucumbers have an opening price of 1.05 Euro and are sold at auction for 90 cents per kilo.

Peppers have also increased in price, although to a lesser extent. Green California peppers have an average price of 68 cents, the Red California have an opening price of 73 cents and are sold at auction for 60 cents and Yellow California prices range from 70 to 95 cents per kilo. The Yellow California is the one reaching higher prices due to lack of supply and strong demand for tricolour packs. Regarding Lamuyo peppers, the Red one is the most expensive one, with prices between 70 and 95 cents. The Green Lamuyo stands at 60 to 80 cents per kilo. Italian peppers remain stable, with prices ranging from 90 cents to 1.10 Euro per kilo.

Tomatoes have also increased in price this week due to a lack of supply caused in some cases by the transition into crops for the upcoming spring. On the vine tomatoes have an opening price of 80 cents and are sold for around 55 cents per kilo. Long life red tomato prices stand at 30 to 50 cents per kilo. Pear tomatoes have an opening price of 50 cents and final prices of 32 cents per kilo. Meanwhile, green beans remain expensive due to lack of supply. Helda beans stand at 2 to 2.40 Euro per kilo. The Red Perona has an average price of 1.90 Euro and the Long Perona stands at 1 to 2.80 Euro per kilo. The Strike beans are once again reaching sky-high prices, with average opening prices of 5 Euro per kilo and finally being sold for 4.20 Euro per kilo.

During the month of January, some of the remaining pepper and tomato stocks, whose growers are transitioning into spring crops, mainly melon and watermelon, will be sold, although many producers choose to continue growing vegetables such as tomatoes or courgettes.
