Honduras: Export growth of eggplants

The export of eggplants has seen a remarkable growth in recent years. Honduras is shipping a minimum of 20,000 tons of the vegetable each year.

Honduras has firmly established itself as a leader in the export of the eggplant, with markets in the United States, Europe, China and other destinations in Central America. In 2012 alone over 500 containers of eggplant were shipped to foreign countries, bringing in 3.2 million in foreign currency, about 64 million Lempiras.

At present, there are some 500 producers of eggplant operational in the country, employing approximately 1,600 people a year. According to Radio HRN de Honduras, a labourer in the field earns between 100 and 150 Lempiras a day, while cleaners and packers of the same product fetch a salary of between 4000 and 6000 per month.
