Sales of mushrooms in the week between Christmas and New Year were, according to Paul Verhoeckx of the mushroom wholesale and export company of the same name, about the same as in previous years. "There is not much difference. One could actually multiply the turnover of the white mushrooms in week 52 by 2.5 and with the special varieties the increase in turnover is still bigger. However, its not like we will be rich due to these weeks. We have to buy a lot of mushrooms and suppliers also know that it is Christmas. But luckily we have been able to satisfy all demands of clients."
At the moment the price of white mushrooms is about Euro 1.50 at the growers and that is not bad, according to Paul. The most important destinations are Scandinavia, France, the United Kingdom and Germany and according to the exporter especially sales to France have been increasing the last few years.
The last week of 2012 was also an improvement, because of much attention for the cultivation of mushrooms by the media. "We are now on the way to receive an offical certification. We have been forced to this because of retail clients, who suddenly demanded the certification.
