Tomatoes may be a natural antidepressant for depression

Eating two tomatoes a week may be a natural remedy for depression, according to Medical Daily on Dec. 6. A team of researchers analyzed health records of older individuals and found those who included the fruit in their diet regularly were less likely to have depression.

It appears the tomato may act as an antidepressant. The study’s finding will be published in the January 2013 issue of the Journal of Affective Disorders.

Unlike other fruits and vegetables, when people ate the tomato every day, the risk of depression was reduced by 52 percent. The study also showed that the people who ate tomatoes two to six times per week were 46 percent less likely to develop depression than those who ate them less than once a week.
