US (MA): 'Pink blimp' provides fresh greens and jobs

If you've driven on Acton Road at night over the last few months, you've probably noticed the big, glowing pink "blimp" at Sunny Meadow Farm.

That's what some have taken to calling the new, state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse scientist-turned-farmer Bill Evans built on a portion of the 8 1/4 acres he and farmer Phil Jones lease at the town-owned farmland.

A pharmaceutical manufacturing consultant with his own business, Evans decided to take a course at the University of Arizona's Controlled Environment Agriculture Center and was hooked.

Evans has two main goals for Fresh Roots: produce high-quality, bionutrient-dense leafy greens and create living-wage jobs for local unemployed and low-income workers.
