WUR researches super-insulation screens

Following a theoretical study by TNO and WUR on ways to improve the insulation of greenhouse screens, Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture has conducted a 2014 trial involving four screens. The trial has now been completed, with a final report becoming available.



With the high wire cultivation of cucumber, the new screen configuration met with theoretical expectations. Compared to a standard greenhouse with a single energy screen, 44% less energy was required to heat the greenhouse from January to May. Production and product quality were comparable to those of a good trial company.

The climate in the greenhouse did change significantly because of the intense screening. A noteworthy effect was the increase of plant temperature caused by reduced cooling. Also noticeable was the absence of sudden drops in temperature and moisture deficit, which normally occur when a screen is closed in the evening or opened in the morning. This is an important step in reducing problems with mold as a result of the temporary loss of evaporation pressure while root pressure remains.

Although these solutions aren’t yet commercially available, they seem to offer promising tools for future cultivation.
