Open day at the strawberry and berry research and experimentation center

The doors of the Nova Siri Genetics research and experimentation center, whose varieties have been introduced into various continents (Europe, America, Africa, and Oceania), have opened for the third consecutive year to enable operators to visit the Policoro facility (Matera) and learn about the everyday research, experimentation, and multiplication activities involving strawberries and berries.

The event has been organized since March 2022, when the hub, which now hosts around 4,000 strawberry and over 1,000 raspberry and blackberry selections, was officially inaugurated.

European visitors visit the strawberry experimental crops

Visitors arrived from many Italian regions as well as from Spain, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt, and, led by company management, they visited the center comprising a research laboratory, a greenhouse for preservation and growth, as well as various experimental fields.

Carmela Suriano (in the photo), EMEA director of the breeding company, commented that, "Nova Siri Genetics is growing a lot. We are confirming and strengthening our position in many areas of the Mediterranean basin. We introduce innovative solutions every year, which is why such events are great opportunities for discussions. We currently have 11 varieties patented by CPVO, which are available to Mediterranean entrepreneurs who have to deal with climate change and the reduced chemicals allowed. It is therefore necessary to have nursery material that is more resistant and able to withstand temperature changes and various production difficulties."

The strawberry and berry segment has evolved significantly over the past few years when it comes to demand, consumption patterns, and increased shelf-life. "Compared with the various fresh products, strawberries and berries do not undergo significant depreciation. They often actually replace traditional products thanks also to new cultivars that extend the harvesting calendar. The increased demand is, however, met by a lower supply in terms of volumes. Over the past few years, we have, in fact, registered a drop in volumes even though cultivated areas have remained the same. Choosing the right cultivar constitutes, therefore, the first important step."

Nicola Tufaro (in the photo above), breeder at NSG, explains that "the sunny day made everything better. Guests are always enthusiast to visit our center because we always introduce new varieties/selections that meet the requests of producers and consumers. We are talking about around 4-5 thousand selections every year for strawberries alone. As for the crops, experimental fields cover around one hectare and a half during the first year. We are currently testing a new raspberry variety that we believe to be very promising due to its deep flavor. We will soon register the first NSG raspberry."

Nova Siri Genetics confirms that there will be a fourth Open Day in March 2025.
