Vegetal Material Programme Leader

Zespri recruits, for its technical office based in Cisterna di Latina (Latium), a Vegetal Material Programme Leader who will be responsible for managing the production and distribution of Zespri protected plant material within Europe.

On behalf of its 4000 growers based in New Zealand, Asia and Europe, it manages kiwifruit innovation, orchard support, supply and distribution management and marketing. Zespri has been in Europe since 2001 and supports nowadays its 700 commercial growers of licensed varieties across France and Italy.

The role
The Vegetal Material Programme Leader’s core mission is to ensure Zespri’s ability to supply high quality vegetal material for rapid orchard development according to strategy and regulations. The role also has a focus on developing and maintaining excellent relationships with stakeholders as nurseries and phytosanitary services, as well as developing a programme to improve quality of plant material being produced across Europe and automate its distribution. Support will also be provided to the team working with growers in Italy.

  • Design and implement the production plan for wood and plants of Zespri varieties in Europe
  • Design and implement an annual extension programme for vegetal material supply for Europe focusing on improving quality and timeliness of delivery of plant material (including demonstration trials, exchange programmes)
  • Manage risk around plant material supply in Europe
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationship with relevant Zespri stakeholders as well as growers, technicians, suppliers partners, phytosanitary services representatives and nursery partners
  • Maintain Zespri’s accreditation in Europe for producing and distributing wood
  • Keep up-to-date with the national and European regulations about plant material management and implement necessary updates to comply with those regulations
  • Maintain registers and legal documentation up to date and ready for audits by the phytosanitary services
  • Prospect and develop new nurseries and orchards around Europe to enable future development as per strategy
  • Ensure certification of commercial orchards across Europe where possible
  • Ensure the contractual framework and payment schemes with plant material partners
  • Manage plant material collection, packing, storage and transport according to legal requirements, suppliers needs and Zespri’s specifications
  • Ensure vegetal material is distributed in a timely fashion and according to the law, Zespri strategy, and project validation
  • Continuously work on improving the efficiency of collection and distribution systems
  • Help develop an automated system to manage inventory and distribution of plant material
  • Support and assist the team and other Europe teams to achieve their missions, namely around support to growers

The profile
We are looking for an organized and rigorous person with strong relationship building and networking skills. The applicant should have ability to think strategically as well as to plan and manage projects to ensure timely outcomes to specifications Computer literacy is needed. Our successful candidate has written and verbal fluency in both Italian and English at a conversational, business and technical level. Good notion of a third language like Spanish, Greek, or French would be appreciated. The applicant should have experience in the horticulture area, preferably nurseries or tree crop. Proven facilitation skills and a passion for extension would be appreciated.

Permanent role, salary based on experienced
Role based in Cisterna di Latina (Latium), with frequent travels within Italy. Some travels internationally
Driving license required, company car provided for professional travels
