The hailstorm in Demre was followed by strong winds which tore up the greenhouse covers in the area. Some greenhouses collapsed and the produce in them were destroyed as a result. Glass greenhouses were also damaged and most of the glass panels were ridden with holes due to the hailstorm.
The district agricultural office determined that there were 10 million square feet of damaged greenhouses in the area and only 15% of it was insured. That’s why the impact of this natural disaster is devastating for the local economy as most growers will have to spend their own money to repair or rebuild greenhouses.
The financial extent of the damage will be determined after further work and the growers are hoping that the government will lend a helping hand to get them back on their feet.
