New greenhouses for potato research opened

Saturday April 7 the potato association Agrico opened the new greenhouse complex at its nursery company Agrico Research. Afterwards there was an open day at the nursery company during 'Come to the Greenhouse Noordoostpolder.' Interest in both activities was high.

In the past year and a half the greenhouse complex of Agrico Research has been completely renewed and extended. The greenhouse area has been doubled and investments have been made in new technologies to increase the number of crossbreeding, and to make breeding new varieties more efficient and effective. The greenhouses have been completed and are in use now. This was celebrated with an official opening with about a hundred guests on April 6. Mayor Aucke van der Werff of the municipality Noordoostpolder was honored to perform the opening. He revealed a botanical mural painting of a blooming potato plant. The painting was made by Hanneke van Middelaar, an Agrico Research employee.

On April 2, 2018 the Agrico Association existed 45 years. This was celebrated together with the opening of the new greenhouses during an open day on April 7. With this Agrico joined the event 'Come to the Greenhouse'. Between 10:00 and 16:00 hours all who were interested, among who also a lot of Agrico members, could admire the new greenhouses. Various activities for both young and old were organised. The attraction D.J french fries machine, in which a potato is processed into a french fry accompanied by music and theater, drew a large crowd. The potato itself could be enjoyed in the form of baked chips and a bag of french fries. Around 1,800 visitors participated in the open day.

CEO Jan van Hoogen looked back at a successful opening. "It is overwhelming to see so much interest in our organisation. Of course we are proud of our new greenhouse complex serving as a nursery for the entire organisation. We are ready for the future with the realized extension, and can create beautiful new and strong breeds. There is a large worldwide demand for our breeds and that will only increase in the coming years. The world population is growing and the potato is the most nutritional crop which can also be the most sustainable to grow."
