Before the growers of the Russian vegetable producer JSC Volga couldn't harvest their first tomatoes before March 20th. Thanks to the implementation of new techniques, the first tomatoes can be harvested this week already. That's why women in Balakovo, in the Saratov region will be presented with tomatoes on the upcoming International Women's Day, March 8th.
Normally women are presented with flowers or chocolates on Women's Day, but Roman Kovalevsky, director of JSC Volga joked on presenting them the tomatoes in a meeting with the regional governor Valeriy Radajev.
New technologies
JSC Volga, the company in question grows vegetables. “Earlier we hardly managed to collect crops by March 20 and today new technologies allow us to be ahead”, explained Mr. Kovalevsky.
The company specializes in growing cucumber, tomatoes, bell peppers and eggplants. Greenhouses occupy 15% of the total territory of 120 ha. The company started in the 1980s during Soviet times and thanks to recent investments including reconstruction of the greenhouses using modern technologies, the production can be harvested earlier.
The enterprise manages to collect over 233 tons of cucumbers and 9 tons of other vegetables a year. The products are sold in fairs and chain stores.
“It’s a versatile enterprise. Today we process and store but we need to take into account our competitors. Therefore we are introducing new technologies and improving the working environment. We need to maintain the dynamics and be more export oriented”, said the governor.
