Drop in Almeria courgette prices

Spain: Morocco exports 18% more courgettes to the EU

The prices of courgettes grown in Almeria during the present campaign have so far been lower than those recorded in the previous campaign. One of the causes for this drop in prices at origin is the greater volume that is reaching the European market, the main destination for the fruits and vegetables grown by Almeria producers.

As revealed in the latest report on Protected Horticulture from the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Government of Andalusia, since week 40 of last year (the first day of October), the European Union has received 18% more courgettes from Morocco compared to the same period last season; that is, from October to mid-February.

Within this period, Moroccan producers have exported 28,568 tonnes of courgettes; slightly more than half of the total volume allowed until 20 April. In the latest week analysed by the Prices and Markets Observatory, shipments increased by 5.4% compared to the same one in 2017. The entry price was higher than 0.63 Euro per kilo; about 2% more than in that same week last year.

Tomatoes
In the case of tomatoes, shipments from Morocco to the European Union remain similar to last year's; in some cases, there have even been slight declines, namely by 0.9%. Since October 2017, when the Moroccan export period to the EU started, up until mid-February, 156,749 tonnes arrived to the EU. In the latest week analysed, the volume shipped increased by 39% compared to the previous one; however, it fell below the one recorded in 2017. The entry price, which stood at 0.93 Euro, was 20% lower.
