Munich Fruit Agency’s bespoke deliveries

Germany: “Trend is towards unpackaged cucumbers”

Today's fruit and vegetable sector is characterized by some clear trends. On the one hand, sustainable packaging is valued more and more, on the other hand, pre-cut goods are clearly on the rise. In the import area and brokering, one can also clearly see these trends, and Munich fruit agency Klaus Burkert, focusing on Spanish fruit and vegetables, saw it as well.

The company currently has cucumbers without plastic wrapping available all year round. According to buyer and seller Jörg Sailer, the product without foil was well received by major customers. “You have two advantages: on the one hand you do not throw away garbage and the product is environmentally friendly. On the other hand, in contrast to the foiled cucumbers, you can see whether the product is damaged or soft." In addition to this, the import company also tries to use environmentally friendly larger packaging as much as possible. “70 percent of our products are sold in Pull or IFCO boxes. We do without wooden crates, boxes and foil as much as possible.”

Another tendency is towards pre-cut goods. As an example, Sailer talks about the so-called Crownless Pineapple, whereby the fruit is delivered without its crown. “These fruits without crowns are very much in demand for processing and in commercial kitchens, since the losses are very low and they take less effort. There is really a huge demand. Of course, this also applies to ready-made salad mixes, cress and snack vegetables.”
