US President Donald Trump told a federation of US farmers that he was working to improve the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Mexico and Canada.
The threats issued by Trump since he became president about the possibility of withdrawing from the NAFTA have not been good for US farmers, and the president tried to appease that sector during a speech in Nashville (Tennessee).
"I am working very hard to achieve a better agreement for our country and for our farmers and manufacturers, it is under negotiation right now," Trump said at the annual convention of the Federated Office of American Farmers.
"When Mexico is making all of that money, when Canada is making all of that money (with NAFTA), it’s not the easiest negotiation in the world, but we are going to make it fair for you people again," the president added.
Earlier, the Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, had acknowledged that there was some anxiety about trade among American farmers, and asked them to trust in the success of the negotiations.
Many American farmers fear that, if Trump withdraws from NAFTA, Mexico and Canada could impose tariffs on US agricultural products, whose export is vital to the economy of several states in the heart of the United States.
The next meeting to renegotiate the NAFTA will take place in Montreal (Canada) at the end of January, and a third of the negotiation is expected to be finished in it, especially on less thorny issues.
