Italy: Remontant strawberries a good solution to extend production season
Diversify, extend the calendar and make strawberry plants more productive - remontant varieties are the perfect solution for all these objectives. This is how Antonio Benzi, one of the leading strawberry producers in Emilia-Romagna, is extending the production season to increase his income.

"Things started off really badly in spring due to the frost. I cut the plants after the May harvest to try and recover something and, thanks to the good vigour of the Brilla variety, I'm now harvesting once again."
Prices show the producer was right, as the average is €4.5-5/kg. His sales channels are the wholesale market in Rimini as well as other markets and retailers. "Some buyers are worried because of the small size of the fruit, but they change their mind as soon as they taste it. I believe consumers, and even buyers, should be educated as regards the flavour of the produce. What does it matter if spring fruit is not big? During this period, strawberries are aromatic and very sweet thanks to the hot temperatures."
The producer decided to opt for irrigation that doesn't include too many nutrients and shading nets. This way, he can grow summer strawberries with excellent organoleptic qualities.
