Growers that are looking for less plastic waste and lower recycling costs can now order a new biodegradable crop twine from Ecolander. They are introducing the fully compostable 'NatureTwine', which is made of all natural materials.
Paul Willetts of Ecolander explained that Mr Alfred Truchsess and Mr Thomas Goldbrunner have been working on the products for quite a long time. "They wanted to make a strong compostable twine using a completely natural material that is stronger and can last for a season. This material is very suitable for use in greenhouses." Willets said that he sees a growing interest for biodegradable twines. "Both among organic and conventional growers. Everyone needs to meet strict recycling standards at the end of the season and it is known that savings on disposable fees can be achieved when using a compostable twine. This makes many of the Dutch growers for example switch from plastic to biological twine. We expect more growers around the world to follow this trend. Next to this, while not mandatory, organic twines compliment organic production. We therefore see organic growers stepping off plastics too."
NatureTwine is suitable for all vegetable productions, whether under the glass or under the open sky. It has a high UV stability twine, the twines behaviour in the glasshouse or in the film tunnel is, however, significantly different. The twine is distinguished by its positive properties with regard to the glass climate. "NatureTwine means you have no plastic waste after the cultural period. The twine has no plastic elements nor is it to be confused with other biotwines. It can be chopped, and shredded at season end and becomes a valuable compost after a short time", said Willets.
The new twine is now available at Ecolander and is available in various configurations with and without wrapped free fall hooks.
