Ton Janssen to focus on promotional activities:

Dutch Tasty Tom grower to sell company

"I can’t say it another way, it was good while it lasted," says Dutch grower Ton Janssen. The man who made the Tasty Tom big in Holland has decided to put his nursery in Venlo up for sale and to focus entirely on the promotional activities for Dutch horticulture and for the Tasty Tom brand. And how do you do that as a marketing man? With a happy video, of course.

"This year I’ll become 61. My three children are not joining the company and my big hobby is to do sector-wide PR and Tasty Tom in particular. I would like to keep going on or expanding, but now I work 60 to 70 hours per week and that I don’t want to do anymore. I have two grandchildren and I cannot say anything else than what other grandfathers say - it's so great to be a grandfather. In fact, I really do not enjoy it enough. Together with my wife I have decided that we have to say goodbye to something. And so we’re going to sell the company." The decision is clear to Ton Janssen, Tasty Tom grower and promoter of the Dutch greenhouse industry: he’s not growing tomatoes anymore.

As the Tasty Tom producer organization wants to have a flatter supply pattern, a less traditional cultivation was chosen. So the greenhouse will be up for sale. In the accompanying video everything becomes clear about the company. The greenhouse, 2.6 hectares at the Leutherweg in Venlo, comes available at the end of November.

Perhaps Ton will go on for another year, but if the company is sold quickly, that is not going to happen either. "I'd like to stop," he says honestly. "I’ve been in the greenhouse since I was four. I never wanted to do anything else - but the cultivation itself I do not expect to miss."
