"GSPP certification indispensable for any self-respecting breeder"

Good Seed and Plant Practices (GSPP), has become a leading global standard for secured hygiene in seed production and plant propagation. Since the introduction of the certification, an increasing amount of growers and propagators no longer want to work with a propagator or seed breeder that is not backed by GSPP. Reason for Turkish seed breeder Yuksel to become accredited. "GSPP certification is indispensable for any self-respecting breeder"."

"GSPP has become a very important standard that provides the industry security. Among others, it decreases the risk for infection and contamination of devastating diseases such as Clavibacter. As we are increasingly active in high value markets, we wanted to become GSPP-certified as soon as possible", said Yuksel's Ziya Yildiz.

According to Yildiz, the GSPP certification is an important step for his group's activities in high tech markets in North America, Europe, North Africa and Turkey.

"Our seed breeding activities and seed production have always met the highest standards in terms of hygiene and safety, yet it is always good to attach a level of security to this in the form of the GSPP certification. Since we do not have any contract seed production, our customers already could rely on the quality and hygiene of our seed, which is produced within the ISO 9001 quality management system. With GSPP however, we can extend our full support and provide even more seed security to propagators and growers. It provides them with an extra insurance and service."

The breeder obtained certification this month, which makes them the first Turkish GSPP certified seed breeder.

"It is pretty unique to become the first certified company in Turkey, which is home to a large vegetable breeding industry. The certification will strengthen our position in our home market, but will even allow us to increase our business activities in North America."

Yuksel sees big chances for growth in this area. With Tyler Clark as their Canadian sales rep and Ricardo Mendez in Mexico, the company is gaining presence in the markets for not so ordinary fruits. Their beef tomatoes Quasimodo and Stealth are important players in the heirloom category, while the brown specialty Espresso is well represented too. Leading North American growers to grow these varieties today.

"We are glad that we can now meet their requests for GSPP certified seeds. But also the propagators in B.C., Ontario and California will be very pleased with this. "
