Johan Grootscholten, Globe Plant:

Dutch growers shift transplant dates from December to January

In December 2014, Johan Grootscholten of propagator Globe Plant talked of how things were doing toward the end of the year. "We are still extremely busy with all the supplies. Most pepper plants have already left the floor. The delivery of both the tomato and cucumber plants are really getting started,” he said. “And the real peak is yet to come: the week between Christmas and New Year."

Dark year
"This year was a good year for production, sunny and warm,” Johan explains. “So the plants were of good quality, but price levels weren’t great. Therefore, many growers tried to prolong production, leading to growers ordering the new plants later than usual. This caused a supply shift from December to January."

Another issue is the darkness. “There simply wasn’t that much sunlight,” says Johan. “At least compared to the same period last year.”

Domestic market
Globe Plant cultivates 5 ha. As regards sales: "We mainly service the domestic market, and volumes have remained relatively stable. In addition, exports are increasing - particularly Belgium, Switzerland and Germany. "
