Ellepot and Blackmore to focus on fruit and veg during Cultivate’14

How the Ellepot system can contribute to help US agriculture industry thrive again

The Ellepot system is already well known, also in America when it comes to ornamental production, but the current aim of Ellepot USA is to target agricultural growers and introduce them to the broad range of advantages of this system. "We really want to share the unique propagation system with sectors other than horticulture," said Lars Jensen of Blackmore / Ellepot USA. "Every grower should start using our eco friendly biodegradable paper Ellepot for their propagation".

Lars Jensen of Blackmore, the US representative for Ellepot said “We would like to show growers in other industries where and how they can benefit from using our Ellepot system. That is why we will also be available on the Cultivate’14 show in Ohio, where we will focus on the success of our agricultural growers. We will showcase all field crops from seedless watermelon to grafted grapes and ready to plant pistachio and citrus trees.”

As he explained “Nowadays growers all over the United States face such challenges as frequent water shortages; high risk of pest infection or increased labour costs. Basically they have to find solutions to obstacles that the greenhouse industry had many years ago. Thus, they have started discovering new ideas, such as the opportunities of grafted vegetable production. Because of this tendency our systems are becoming increasingly interesting for them as well.”

Jensen also mentioned that Ellepot USA would like to show growers, that the change of technology can come with numerous further advantages. “Of course the producers know that changing to a new pot system might be a greater cost. However, shifting to Ellepot, combined with good growing practices quickly pays off. Our growers are experiencing faster growth, less losses and better uniformity. Moreover, not only can they plant the crops considerably faster (in case of manual planting, they can save around 40% of the labour cost) but the yield is much higher as well.”

According to Jensen, especially the large jumbo Ellepot from 50mm to 120mm shows great potential for agriculture. "Besides the agrinomical advantage, the system is also using less labour in the first stages. "One person can operate the pot production, he can do all the filling of the pots and put them into the growing tray / holder. Many nurseries have 15-25 people doing this task today," Jensen said. "Besides this the cost of the Ellepot in the larger sizes is more than 10 times less expensive than the plastic pots or containers.

Jensen said that every grower needs to make some calculations with such big changes, and Ellepot is always happy to help with that. As Jensen explained “We would like growers to make informed decisions about their pot system. Our purpose is not to convince them to change necessarily, but to convince them to use the technology which is the best for their production. In order to achieve this, we have up-to-date financial data and performance data available for the growers.”

During Cultivate'14, the CEO of Elleegaard, Mr Lars Steen Pedersen, will present the economic proof to why Ellepots are cheaper than loose filled trays in the case of grafted vegetables.
