Russia: Moscow greenhouse grower celebrates 50th anniversary

The produce of this complex is sold all around Moscow. The flowers grown here annually decorate the festival Flower Jam. The Mayor of Moscow, Mr. Sergey Sobyanin visited the enterprise and congratulated the employees.

“It is a significant jubilee for the enterprise. We want to thank you for providing the Moscow dwellers with produce of high quality: vegetables and lettuce as well as five million tulips for the women”, said Mr. Sobyanin.

Agricultural complex Moscovskiy is one of the biggest greenhouse companies in Russia. The enterprise employs 1100 people. In the greenhouses, with an overall acreage of 75 ha, they grow cucumbers, tomatoes and eggplants, greenery and lettuce, flowers and seedlings.

In 2017, the enterprise grew 6.5 thousand tons of vegetables, 5.5 thousand tons of tomatoes, 2 thousand tons of eggplants, 44.3 million heads of lettuce and greenery. As for flowers, they produced 1.4 million pot plants and hanging plants (80 varieties), 7.5 million annuals, 5.1 million tulips, as well as 1.2 million vegetable seedlings.

In 2018-2019 the enterprise are planning to construct a multifunctional highly automated greenhouse with an acreage of 1.8 ha. It will be used for growing lettuce, seedlings, tulips and other flowers. As a result, the customers will receive about 7 million more production items. The investments in the construction will comprise 8.85 million euros.

As Mr. Sobyanin noted during his visit to the complex, the Moscow government will actively support the projects carried out by the enterprise.

“I consider it very important that Moscow retains an agricultural complex. Yours and other enterprises of the Moscow region are not going to be closed, vice versa, we will support them”, noted Mr. Sobyanin.

He added that the city is working on a transport system in the regions recently adjoined to Moscow. New roads are being constructed and new metro stations opened.

“This year we opened a metro station not far from here. Next year another station close to you will be opened. The enterprise will become more accessible and it will be easier for the employees and visitors to get here”, reported the Mayor of Moscow.

50 years in the shops of Moscow: the history of the agricultural complex
The company was established in 1968. First, the enterprise occupied a territory of 36 ha. The equipment for the project and special glass block greenhouses were purchased in the Netherlands. Already in 1970, Moscow dwellers received the first produce from the enterprise.

After that, the complex continued developing. In 1972 two additional blocks of greenhouses, 9 ha each, were installed. Four years later, in 1976, a champignon complex was constructed.

In 1980, the construction of greenhouse complex #2 began. Covering an acreage of 60 ha, domestic materials and technologies were used in the construction. The complex was completed after 7 years. By 1987, the overall acreage reached 114 ha. The complex annually provided 30 thousand tons of vegetable produce.

In 1994, the complex was reorganized into СJSC agricultural complex Moscovskiy.

A year later the installation of a drip irrigation system began. In 1997, a local computer network was installed for production management.

In 1999, the enterprise started a line on potted lettuce growing.

A full-scale project for potted plants, greenery and seedlings with an energy center of 18 MW was carried out in 2013. The acreage of the high-tech complex comprised 15 ha. Its launch expanded the scope and increased the efficiency of the enterprise. The assortment has expanded due to a wider variety of plants and flowers, and new varieties of lettuce. Moreover, it has become possible to grow seedlings not only for the company's own needs but also for sale.

In 2016, a service distribution center with an overall acreage of 1.7 was built. Here both the company's own produce is loaded and prepared for sale and services to second parties are provided. The center can manage over 500 thousand tons a day.

A year later the enterprise opened its own stock for flower produce with an overall acreage of 0.5 ha and a capacity of 300,000 flowers a day.

The enterprise also has its own car fleet: 150 trucks with climate control. This allows them to deliver the produce to 1200 sales outlets fast and with no damage to the quality.
