Price of Chinese greenhouse tomatoes increases as open-field tomato production season ends

"The production season of open-field tomatoes begins annually in the last week of July, if weather conditions are regular, and concludes in October. This year, the harvesting season of open-field tomatoes already finished during the National Day holiday period in early October because of environmental and weather conditions. The price of open-field tomatoes showed great fluctuations this year. The price of greenhouse tomatoes is quite stable by comparison." This is according to Yan Peicheng, chairman of the board of Gansu Chuangli Agricultural Development Co., Ltd.

Tomatoes

"The overall supply of tomatoes greatly declines when the production season of open-field tomatoes comes to an end. This opens up great market opportunities for greenhouse tomatoes. Of course, the surface area of greenhouse tomato plantations is limited and the cost price of plantation is higher. The price of greenhouse tomatoes from the beginning of October onward has been relatively high at around 5,000 yuan [723.39 USD] per ton."

Tomato plantation of Gansu Chuangli Agricultural Development Co., Ltd.

"There is a clear difference in the flavors of open-field tomatoes and greenhouse tomatoes. The taste of open-field tomatoes is in general fresher and more pleasing. We cooperate with local farmers in our open-field tomato plantations, which means that our company has a relatively large supply volume. As for storage, we generally do not store tomatoes in refrigerated storage as we harvest and sell in the same period. This is because tomatoes are difficult to store and easily rot in storage."

New Red Star apples

"We mainly store onions, Brussels sprouts, pears, and apples. We sell our products in Beijing Xinfadi Market, Xi'an, Shanghai, Tianjin, Zhengzhou, Inner Mongolia, Russia, and the Middle East."
