Italy: At day at Meridiem Seeds' demo greenhouse

Over 200 commercial farms, nursery gardeners, technicians and retailers visited the Meridiem Seeds' tomato demo greenhouse set up by F.lli Giamblanco.

The F.lli Giamblanco company was chosen because it is a leader in the tomato, pepper, watermelon and melon sector. The company grows its produce with low environmental impact in order to obtain excellent fruit and vegetables that comply with domestic and international retailer needs.

Meridiem Seeds managers say that "the objective was to launch Verace tomatoes, which are ideal throughout the year and are an excellent hybrid. Setting is good even under stressful weather conditions, grades are uniform and they have a good TY tolerance."

Two types of Verace tomatoes.

"Distinctive characteristics are its deep green or red colour along with fruit which is tasty, crunchy and fleshy."

In addition to Verace, Meridiem Seeds also showcased a selection of its old and new varieties:

1) Plum tomatoes such as Royalty (120-140 grams, excellent in winter too) or Capirex Unicolor (90-120 grams, very popular with organic producers thanks to its resistance).

Capirex.

2) Raider cocktail tomatoes, a true fruit-producing machine. Bunches have 14-16 fruits (35-40 grams) with an excellent bright red colour, high Brix level and they are also crunchy. Ideal also for winter-spring harvesting.

3) Ruano, which produces tasty and fleshy 220-250 gram green fruits perfect for local consumption. Good tolerance to TY.

4) El Cabo, red tomatoes harvested singularly and packed in 40x60 cm basket boxes as if they were green ones.

"Our country imports a lot of similar produce from April onwards," say Meridiem Seeds managers. El Cabo produces fruit weighing more than 250 grams and is extremely tolerant to TY, SW and N. Ideal especially for harvests between April and July in Sicily.

5) MS452 is the perfect big bunch tomato (180-200 gram) for harvests from December onwards. The shelf-life is excellent and the produce is uniform. No cracking and no blotchy ripening.

Meridiem Seeds Italia has therefore confirmed its identity of an R&D oriented seed company to meet the needs of consumers in the next few years. It manages to do this by monitoring and working with the trade world as well as with the European and global production consumers.
