Kenya: EAC-EU trade talks could be concluded by May

The ongoing EAC EU Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations could be concluded by the end of May, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Eng. Karanja Kibicho has said adding that the number of contentious issues has been reduced to three. They include issues on governance, export taxes, subsidies and domestic support.

The EAC region has a tangible opportunity to seize the advantages offered by the EPA and to maintain Duty Free Quota Free access for all Kenyan exports to the 500 million consumer EU market. The East African nation stands to benefit from foreign exchange earnings, employment opportunities and penetration to the European Union market with EPA.

The Kenyan Government is committed to ensure that the negotiations are concluded by the Ministerial Council meeting expected to happen by mid-May 2014.
